The Concept

Some things are best understood by touch: a dovetail joint, the weight of solid wood, the way light changes depending on how a shade is made.

The Dresdner Zimmer was founded on this conviction: that craft is not a category, but an experience. It is a collaborative platform bringing together makers and designers with a broader national and international reach, working at the intersection of tradition and contemporary relevance.

The initiative grew from a shared observation: many small and mid-sized studios and workshops in the furniture and interior sector produce work of genuine quality and distinction, yet often lack the visibility or structural reach their work would deserve. The market rewards scale. Craft rewards attention. Finding a balance between these two realities is the central challenge.

Rather than compete in isolation, a group of committed partners chose to work differently. Together, they form a platform for communication and collaboration — a collective voice that extends further than any single studio could sustain alone. The aim is not uniformity, but critical mass: a portfolio broad enough to be compelling, and coherent enough to carry meaning.

What unites the partners is not a shared aesthetic, but a shared standard: rigorous design, entirely handcrafted production, and a deliberate commitment to keeping both making and meaning local — strengthening regional supply chains and consumption patterns as a form of practice, not just principle.

The project launched in 2023 with a pop-up exhibition at Designcampus Pillnitz. Eight partners presented work from their current collections, installed within the castle’s historic rooms. The pairing was intentional: objects made for everyday use — sofas, lighting, wall coverings — placed in quiet dialogue with centuries of applied craft. No apology for the commercial, no claim to pure artistic autonomy — just well-made things, honestly presented.

The response was strong enough to deepen the ambition. A permanent showroom is the next step — a dedicated space where the platform’s guiding principle can be experienced directly: craft must be experienced to be understood.

That space will also serve as an open invitation — to new partners, new disciplines, and a broader representation of what regional making can become when given room to speak.

We believe a living craft culture depends on this combination: the aesthetic argument and the economic one, held together, neither sacrificed for the other.

Shaped by the Rabenau school and years of experience in bespoke furniture making, Stefan Heinz has developed the craft of chair building to a high level of mastery. In this course, he shares his knowledge and skills with interested practitioners.

Pop-Up Workshop & Exhibition
Design Campus, Schloss Pillnitz

»Dresdner Zimmer« RELOADED: a pop-up workshop for design-oriented regional craft as part of the DESIGN CAMPUS Lab at Schloss Pillnitz.
The workshop at the DESIGN CAMPUS aims to create a space for exchange and for reflecting on the potential of a platform brand representing regional craft products at the highest level of quality. What forms and modes of interaction and partnership are possible in order to establish a strong and coherent framework?

These questions are discussed together with partners, interested parties, customers, and enthusiasts within a small exhibition setting. The DESIGN CAMPUS, as a forum for contemporary design, and the Museum of Decorative Arts of the State Art Collections Dresden, as a place for presenting and researching the evolving culture of living, provide an ideal setting and host.

»Dresdner Zimmer« RELOADED is an initiative by Bisch-Chandaroff Werkstätten, in cooperation with the design studio StephanPartner.

Products

noord
Manufacturer:
Heinz – Möbelbau
Contact:
info@heinz-moebel.de

The chair
noord is inspired by the vibrant atmosphere of Amsterdam Noord — a district shaped by creative spaces, industrial structures, and a distinctive urban energy. Influences from the NDSM Wharf, with its studios, workshops, and container architecture, are reflected in the chair’s clear silhouette and confident material presence.
Crafted from solid oak, noord combines precise proportions with a calm and durable character. The coloured editions are produced in ash wood, whose fine grain adds a lighter and more refined expression. Carefully executed mortise-and-tenon joints and hand-finished bevels on the solid wood seat emphasise the chair’s tactile quality and lasting comfort.

The colour palette references the tones of shipping containers and industrial surfaces found throughout Amsterdam Noord: deep black, dark red, sage green, and natural oak create a balance between expressive accents and understated materiality. Custom colour editions allow for additional variations and project-specific adaptations.

Whether used in offices, co-working environments, or residential interiors, noord functions as a versatile seating object that combines craftsmanship, clarity, and a strong visual identity.

The BC2 Lounge Chair Family is a series of handcrafted seating furniture for residential and commercial interiors. Defined by a calm and reduced design language, the system combines modular seat and backrest elements that can be assembled through a precise plug-in construction. Three seat widths and three backrest heights create a versatile family of armchairs and sofas that can be further individualised through a selection of loose back cushions.

Particular attention is given to the upholstery details: all covers are sewn by hand, and the carefully curated »Savile Row« range of fabrics references traditional tailoring craftsmanship and its contemporary interpretation.

Following an extended development process and the evaluation of multiple concepts, Bisch-Chandaroff Werkstätten decided to realise the BC2 Series as a central product line. Alongside contemporary design, the focus lies on local production, exclusive craftsmanship, and a conscious approach to sourcing, manufacturing, and durability.
